Virginia Commonwealth University announced today it will join the Atlantic 10 Conference effective July 1, 2012.

examined several options, including remaining in its current
conference home, the Colonial Athletic Association, and multiple factors
led to the decision to leave the CAA and begin competing in the
21-sport league that is considered one of the best conferences in the
country.

"VCU believes the A-10 represents the best opportunity to meet our
long-term aspirations for national academic and athletic achievement,"
said VCU President Michael Rao. "As a Division I, nationally
competitive athletics program, it is critical that VCU seizes the
opportunity to further elevate its athletics as it raises its overall
academic profile as a national research university."

Move supports strategic plan

Rao said that VCU's Quest for Distinction
strategic plan calls for excellence in everything the university does,
including athletics - and moving to the Atlantic 10 Conference
supports that quest for higher standards of excellence in VCU's
athletics program.

"The Atlantic 10 is a conference that gives us an opportunity to not
only build our national brand, but also be associated with and compete
against great institutions with tremendous profiles, both athletically
and academically," said David Benedict, VCU's interim director of
athletics. "We believe that the transition to the A-10 allows us to
enhance the experience of all of our student-athletes."

Rao and Benedict said the university's
17-year membership in the Colonial Athletic Association was mutually
beneficial to the CAA institutions and to VCU. However, with
tremendous changes in the college athletics landscape, affiliating with
the Atlantic 10 Conference at this time best supports VCU's long-term
strategic goals.

"It is my privilege to be able to announce
the addition of VCU to the Atlantic 10 Conference. It is an institution
rich in tradition, academic excellence and broad-based athletic
success," said Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade. "One of
the driving forces and priorities of the A-10 is to further enhance our
national prominence in men's basketball, build our brand and
strengthen our current footprint. In addition to bringing in
well-rounded sports programs across the board, VCU solidifies the A-10
academically and athletically."

Financial considerations

Rao said the financial considerations
involved in the move to the A-10 are not insignificant, but that any
financial analyses or projections prepared now are based on projections
and highly variable factors. Offsetting these costs are several
potential financial benefits to VCU by joining the A-10, including
increased annual revenue sharing.

"VCU has made substantial investments in its
athletics programs in recent years, and a strategic facilities plan is
under development," Rao said. "Moving to a major, basketball focused
conference will enable VCU to build on its commitments and successes
while also continuing its rise on the national sports scene.

'Ideals square perfectly' with A-10

"The addition of Virginia Commonwealth
University to the Atlantic 10 further strengthens us as the nation's
premier basketball-driven conference," said Father Michael J. Graham,
Xavier University President and Chair of the Atlantic 10 Council of
Presidents. "Accepting VCU's application makes sense on two important
levels -- their emphasis on the quality of the student experience of
their student-athletes, especially in the classroom, and their
commitment to the highest levels of competition. Both ideals square
perfectly with the identity of the A-10 and all of its member
institutions."

Other members of the Atlantic 10 Conference are
the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the University of
Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham, George Washington University, La
Salle University, the University of Massachusetts, the University of
Rhode Island, the University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure, Saint
Joseph's University, Saint Louis University, Temple University and
Xavier University. Butler University will join the conference in
2013-2014.

the evening of May 6, Danielle Ashe prepared herself to watch nearly 11
months of hard work come to fruition.

The show director for the Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Fashion Design and Merchandising's
annual juried fashion show, Ashe spent 15 to 25 hours a week working
with a committee of fashion merchandising students to hammer out the
details for the sold-out event. Now, she joined more than 400 other
spectators to view the show-stopping handiwork of 61 junior and senior
design and merchandising students.

"To see the runway lights go up and the first garment come out was
just amazing," said Ashe, a senior fashion merchandising major.

Nearby, senior Jasmine Harrison was also having a moment. Five
outfits designed by Harrison had been selected for the show by the jury,
but she was particularly excited to see one of her menswear designs,
which received a first-place award for menswear by Cotton Incorporated,
come down the runway.

During spring commencement ceremonies Saturday, May 12, former U.S. congressman
J.C. Watts Jr. told Virginia Commonwealth University's newest graduates
that forgiveness, family and friends, generosity and a willingness to be
challenged were critical principles to a stable, successful life.

Watts, a former star quarterback at Oklahoma, said that vigilant
coaches who confronted him about his mistakes were essential influences
in his development in college.

"Find someone in your life who can correct you," said Watts, who
represented the fourth district of Oklahoma in the United States House
of Representatives from 1995 to 2002. "Correction is not something that
we accept easily, but it is necessary."

Students received professional, graduate and undergraduate degrees at
the ceremony at the Richmond Coliseum. Approximately 2,300 students
attended the ceremony, and more than 4,900 degrees were conferred.

VCU President Michael Rao, Ph.D., urged graduates "to use your
education as a force of good in our world," noting that VCU alumni are
known as "people who make a difference."

"They are innovators, leaders in their disciplines, visionaries who
are laser-focused and committed to excellence in everything they do,"
Rao said. "Our graduates do not just take jobs - they create them, and
they create opportunities for others."

Watts was awarded the Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters, VCU's highest form of recognition.

The Edward A. Wayne Medal, established in 1971 to honor individuals
who have made outstanding contributions or provided exemplary service to
VCU, was bestowed on James W. and Frances G. McGlothlin, longtime
supporters of the VCU School of Medicine, and posthumously on Arthur
Graham and Margaret Branch Glasgow, whose trust bequeathed a substantial
gift to VCU in 2011 to support the cure and prevention of cancer and
other degenerative disease.

The Presidential Medallion, established in 1984 to recognize
individuals for extraordinary achievement in learning and commitment to
the mission of VCU, was awarded to William L. Dewey, Ph.D., a longtime
faculty member and administrator and currently the chair of the
Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology.

Watch video from Commencement ceremony.

Events included student- and faculty-led tours and the dedication of the Kathryn Lawrence Dragas (M.S.O.T.'01/AH) Sensory Processing and Stree Evaluation Lab. Alumni experienced the assistive technology lab and challenged students to a game of Wii or an activity using the Saebo. In addition, visitors viewed recent adaptive projects developed by students, SPASE lab testing and memorabilia from over the 70 years, including yearbooks and a scrapbook put together by Laura Evans (B.S.'81/AH) and Jayne Shepherd (M.S.'82/AH).

The Class of 1981 had the most participants -- nine of the 15 graduates returned to campus for lunch and a tour of the department.

The dedication of the Kathryn Lawrence Dragas SPASE Lab was opened by Cecil Drain, Ph.D., dean of the School of Allied Health Professions, followed by remarks from chair, Al Copolillo, Ph.D. Recipients of the Dragas scholarship, Jessica Lynn and Jenny Bonano, shared their thoughts on the meaning of the scholarship. William Dragas, Fiona Bessey-Bushnell (M.S.O.T.'01/AH) and Shelly Lane, Ph.D., also spoke to the life and passion of Dragas and the meaning of promoting future research in sensory processing, one of her interests in occupational therapy.

Throughout the afternoon, current students in both the first and second year of the program assisted in running demonstrations of the mobile physiologic measurement capabilities and the behavioral measures currently in use in the lab. These tools provide insights into sensory processing disorders in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (Dragas' passion) along with ADHD and sensory modulation disorders.

The celebration wrapped up with 70th Anniversary Celebration and Silent Auction at the Omni Hotel. The audience was treated to a student-made video illustrating occupational therapy across the decades as told by alumni. Thanks to the efforts of Jacque Cherry (M.S.O.T.'08/AH) the silent auction raised $7,000 for Building for the Future Fund. Later that evening, Fred Sammons (Cert.'55/AH) was awarded the Making a Difference
Alumni Award for his numerous contributions to the profession and the
department.

Many thanks to new alumni Candice Canody, Cody Larue, and Randi Dayton for all their planning, help and enthusiasm for this successful event.

One alumna wrote the next day to show her gratitude.

"I couldn't have imagined a better gathering for the OT
reunion. I still feel very much a part of VCU (even after 12 years) and
I'm proud to tell people that I am an alumna."
In anticipation of this year's reunion, a few VCU School of Pharmacy alumni shared some of their own reminiscences:

TOM RORRER (B.S.'52/P), CLASS OF 1952

In 1948, a 17-year-old boy left his home in Coeburn, Va., in the heart of coal-mining country, headed for pharmacy school. It was his first big trip away from home. He walked along the gravel rail bed to board the N&W passenger train, climbed aboard and found a seat. His first stop was Bluefield, W.Va., to change trains. He boarded the N&W's fastest passenger train, the Powhatan Arrow, and proceeded to Petersburg, Va. There, he again changed trains for Richmond aboard an RF&P passenger train that ultimately stopped under a large building, Broad Street Station (now the Science Museum of Virginia).

He walked upstairs to a magnificent lobby, which led outside to tall buildings, streetcars and city buses, taxis and a lot of traffic. These things did not exist in Coeburn.

"I spent two years living at the YMCA at Franklin and Foushee streets. My idea of culture was to walk through the lobby of The Jefferson Hotel down the street, Richmond's grandest hotel. After spending four years on the second floor of McGuire Hall and its annex, I became a pharmacist and joined a profession that served me well."

**********

"My pharmacy school week went something like this. I spent 30 hours per week in classes and labs, then worked 20 hours per week at Jeffries Pharmacy, located on the Boulevard, to earn the $20 it would take to pay my weekly expenses.

"A room at the YMCA (double occupancy) cost $4.50 per week. A meal at Crouses Restaurant on Third Street cost 25 to 35 cents, breakfast at Shaia's Grill cost 20 cents and then the rest went for laundry, etc. Tuition was $100 per quarter and another $100 yearly for books and supplies. Things change. Pharmacy has changed. Pharmacy served me well."

Read more memories.

The VCU School of Pharmacy's outreach initiatives - whether local, national or international and whether daylong or weeks long - continue to expand.

"Our next and newest big deal is VSU [Virginia State University] Cares,"reports associate professor Evan Sisson, who coordinates the school's medical outreach programs.

We are very excited to develop enhanced interprofessional relationships with the Schools of Dentistry and Medicine through the formation of teams at the event. Imagine groups of two to three students from different disciplines working together as a unit to see patients!"

Set up for the VSU Cares event is scheduled to begin June 8. Fifty to 100 patients will be triaged; specific pharmacy student activities on the day of the event, June 9, will include medication reconciliation, point of care testing (INR, blood glucose and A1C), dispensing pre-op and post-op medications, patient education (smoking cessation and diabetes) and discharge counseling.
The school's global health initiatives are coordinated by assistant professor Mary Jayne Kennedy, who also is a member of the HOMBRE board of directors.

The Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy Class of 2012 is about to spread its wings, heading into a plethora of careers ranging from pharmacy practice to residencies and postgraduate
education.

The school's
Hooding and Diploma Ceremony recognized 125 Pharm.D. and 22 Pharmaceutical
Sciences Graduate Programs students May 11 at St. Paul's Baptist Church. The
universitywide commencement took place the following day at Richmond Coliseum.

According to the
American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, the 2012 pharmacy resident match
resulted in the highest number of candidates and the highest number of
positions filled since the program began in 1979. A residency is defined as an
organized, directed, postgraduate training program to train pharmacists in
professional practice and management activities. Residents gain in-depth
experience in integrating pharmacy services with the comprehensive needs of
individual practice settings, which leads to advanced practice skills and
knowledge.

This year, 13
percent more Pharm.D. candidates across the country sought PGY1 residencies
and 25 percent more sought PGY2 residencies. A total of 2,268 PGY1 and 505 PGY2
positions matched, with 12 percent more PGY1 positions and 15 percent more PGY2
positions filled.

Those numbers
include 30 percent of the VCU School of Pharmacy's Pharm.D. Class of 2012. For

into which they were accepted, please visit our website.

VCU School of Nursing student group Nursing Students Without Borders participated in Relay for Life of
VCU on April 21 at the Cary Street Field. Students also coordinated a
bake sale and offered blood pressure screenings on site. The NSWB team
raised over $1,500 for Relay for Life of VCU.

Relay For Life is organized for individuals to celebrate the lives of
people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight
back against the disease. At Relay events, teams of people camp out and
take turns walking or running around a track or path. Because cancer
never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length.

Learn more.
